Where Traditions Meet, Community Rises

Celebrating the People and Traditions That Make Las Vegas Home

One of my favorite things about Las Vegas has nothing to do with the Strip. It’s the people who make this city feel like home: the families building businesses, the neighbors who show up, and the traditions that give us reasons to gather.

As we move from Día de los Muertos into Thanksgiving and the holiday season, I’ve been thinking about a question every business should ask: What’s being celebrated in the communities we serve?

Knowing your neighbors means knowing what matters to them. That includes the holidays they observe, the traditions they hold close, and the moments when they come together. We don’t have to observe every holiday to recognize its importance and show support.

For a business, that can be as simple as learning the dates of community celebrations before planning a promotion or event. It can mean giving employees the flexibility to honor family traditions, sharing local events with customers, or partnering with neighborhood organizers in useful ways. A restaurant might collaborate with another family business on a seasonal gathering. A retailer might feature products from local makers. A business owner might sponsor a cultural festival, buy from its vendors, or simply show up and listen.

“How can we contribute?”

The important part is doing it with care. Supporting a tradition isn’t about turning it into a sales opportunity or borrowing something meaningful for a marketing campaign. It’s about asking, “How can we contribute?” and letting the people who know and cherish that tradition lead the way.

And there’s a business lesson here, too. People remember who showed up. When we take an interest in the lives of our customers and neighbors, we build trust that no advertisement can buy. We also discover businesses, artists, and community leaders we might never have met otherwise. Those connections can lead to referrals, partnerships, and a stronger local economy.

Las Vegas is home to communities with different histories, languages, and celebrations. That diversity gives us more opportunities to learn from one another and work together. Hispanic businesses and cultural celebrations have long helped shape the heart of Las Vegas.

A meaningful connection

This is where I see a meaningful connection between El Mundo and RISE Magazine.

Both publications believe local stories matter. By sharing community calendars, spotlighting neighborhood celebrations and the people behind them, and introducing business owners across different networks, we can help more people participate, not just read about what’s happening. We can encourage businesses to support events beyond their usual circles and help ensure that more voices and traditions are seen and respected.

My hope is that collaboration becomes something we practice, not just something we talk about, and that more of us attend one another’s events, recommend one another’s businesses, and make space for the celebrations that matter to our neighbors.

This season, before we plan our next campaign or company gathering, let’s ask one more question: What matters to the community around us, and how can we show up for it?

Because when we honor the traditions that make our neighbors who they are, we do more than build good business. We build a city where more people feel they belong.
